Car Ownership Guide

Driving in Cyprus: MOT, Road Tax, Insurance & Rules (2026)

Owning a car in Cyprus is often practical, but it comes with a simple annual rhythm: keep your MOT valid, keep your insurance active, and renew your circulation licence on time. Miss one part and the rest can become messy quickly.

2026 road-tax calendar

The Road Transport Department announced that 2026 circulation licences could be renewed from 7 January 2026, with the final renewal deadline at 23:59 on 11 March 2026. A valid MOT and insurance are required before renewal.

The Annual Big Three for Car Owners

1. MOT / Roadworthiness Test

The MOT is the periodic technical inspection that confirms a vehicle is roadworthy. It checks items such as brakes, lights, tyres, steering, suspension and emissions.

  • Private cars: typically first tested at 4 years old, then every 2 years.
  • Imported used cars: may need inspection earlier, depending on registration history.
  • Where: use an authorised testing station.
  • Bring: vehicle registration/log book and any documents requested by the station.

2. Road Tax / Circulation Licence

This is the licence that allows your vehicle to circulate on public roads. It is renewed online and can only be issued when the vehicle record shows valid MOT and insurance.

  • Renewal periods: commonly available for 3, 6, 9 or 12 months.
  • Calculation: depends on vehicle details such as emissions, fuel type and registration characteristics.
  • Deadline: for 2026, renew by 11 March 2026 at 23:59 to avoid penalties.
  • Online service: use the official Gov.cy road tax renewal service.

3. Car Insurance

At least third-party motor insurance is mandatory. Without valid insurance, you cannot legally drive and you will not be able to renew road tax.

  • Third-party: covers injury or damage you cause to others, not your own car.
  • Third-party, fire and theft: adds theft and fire cover for your vehicle.
  • Comprehensive: broader cover, usually best for newer or higher-value vehicles.
  • Check named drivers: policies may restrict who can drive the car.

Key Driving Rules and Newcomer Traps

Cyprus driving is familiar to UK drivers because traffic keeps left, but enforcement and local habits still catch newcomers out.

Rule / Situation What You Need to Know
Driving sideDrive on the left and overtake on the right.
MotorwaysThe standard motorway limit is 100 km/h, with a 65 km/h minimum unless signs say otherwise.
Other roadsCommon limits are 80 km/h outside built-up areas and 50 km/h in built-up areas, but posted signs always control.
RoundaboutsGive way to traffic already on the roundabout and approaching from your right.
Mobile phonesHandheld phone use while driving is illegal. Use a proper hands-free setup and avoid distraction.
AlcoholThe legal drink-drive limit is low. The safest approach is zero alcohol when driving.
Seatbelts and childrenSeatbelts are mandatory, and children must use suitable child restraints for their age/size.
ParkingRespect yellow lines, disabled bays, pavements and local signs. Parking habits may look relaxed, but fines still happen.
