Settling-In Guide
Your First Month in Cyprus: A Settling-In Checklist (2026)
The first month in Cyprus is a mix of admin, apartment decisions, small discoveries and moments where you wonder which office you are supposed to visit next. Use this checklist to sequence the important tasks without trying to solve your whole new life in one week.
Pro tip: book appointments early, keep originals and copies in one folder, and leave breathing room between tasks. Many steps depend on another document being ready first.
Budget before habits settle.
Use our Cost of Living Calculator to set a realistic monthly budget before rent, transport and cafe spending become automatic.
Week 1: Get Functional
Your first essentials
Get a local SIM or eSIM
A Cyprus number helps with bank appointments, agents, deliveries, utility calls and government forms. Bring your passport or ID; prepaid SIMs require identity registration.
Confirm temporary or long-term housing
Inspect the property, check water pressure, air conditioning, internet availability, parking, rubbish collection and whether utility accounts need transfer.
Estimate rent and bills with the Rental Cost Calculator.
Map your neighbourhood
Find your nearest pharmacy, supermarket, bakery, kiosk, bank branch, bus stop, clinic and municipality office. These small anchors make the first weeks much easier.
Week 2: Start the Admin Chain
Appointments and accounts
Book your immigration appointment
EU citizens should plan the MEU1/Yellow Slip route if staying over 3 months. Non-EU citizens should follow the correct temporary residence or work/residence route. Appointment availability can shape your whole first-month timeline.
Open or activate banking
Bring passport/ID, proof of address, tax-residence information, income evidence and lease/employment documents. Some newcomers use an international fintech account first, then open a Cyprus account once paperwork is stronger.
Understand transport
Test the bus route you actually need, not only the route on a map. If you will buy a car, start checking insurance, MOT, road tax and parking realities early.
Compare routes and costs with the Public Transport Cost Calculator.
Weeks 3 and 4: Make It Livable
Home, health and routine
Attend or finalise immigration steps
Bring originals, copies, passport photos if requested, proof of funds, health insurance, lease, employment/self-employment evidence and any translated/legalised documents required for your category.
Set up electricity, water and internet
Utility setup may require a lease, ID, deposits and branch visits. Take meter readings when moving in and keep photos.
Plan healthcare access
Check whether you are eligible for GESY now or need private insurance first. If eligible, register and choose a Personal Doctor. Keep emergency numbers and the nearest A&E location saved.
Build a local routine
Use the same bakery, cafe, gym, school route or coworking place often enough that people start recognising you. Community in Cyprus often grows from repeated small contact.
Documents to Keep Handy

- Lease or proof of accommodation.
- Proof of funds, payslips, employment contract or pension evidence.
