Mobility Guide
Public Transport in Cyprus: Buses, Fares and Apps (2026)
Cyprus is still a car-oriented island, but buses can work well for city errands, commuting on main corridors, airport transfers and travel between major towns. The trick is planning around timetables rather than assuming turn-up-and-go frequency.
Reality check: Cyprus has no passenger rail network. Public transport is mainly buses, plus airport shuttles and taxis. It is useful in cities and between main towns, but rural villages, mountain areas and beaches often still need a car, taxi or organised transfer.
The Network at a Glance
| Service | Best for | Planning tip |
|---|---|---|
| Urban buses | City travel, suburbs, schools, hospitals and shopping areas. | Use the district operator website or app for routes and live updates. |
| Intercity buses | Travel between Nicosia, Limassol, Larnaca, Paphos and Famagusta district hubs. | Check last return times carefully, especially weekends and holidays. |
| Airport shuttles | Lower-cost travel to and from Larnaca and Paphos airports. | Book or check timetables before travelling late at night. |
| Taxis and ride alternatives | Gaps in bus service, late arrivals, villages and door-to-door trips. | Budget for taxis if you live outside a strong bus corridor. |
Urban Bus Operators
- Nicosia and Larnaca: Cyprus Public Transport operates the main district networks.
- Limassol: EMEL operates the district bus network.
- Paphos: OSYPA operates the district bus network.
- Famagusta district: OSEA serves areas including Ayia Napa and Paralimni/Protaras.
Fares and card rules can change. Cyprus Public Transport published a new ticketing policy from 1 March 2026, so always check the operator fare page before relying on older prices.
Tickets, Cards and Apps
Motion Bus Card
A reusable card is usually better for regular travel, passes and discounted categories. Check where the card is accepted and how to top it up in your district.
PAME / operator apps
Use apps and operator websites for route planning, live bus positions where available, stops and timetable changes.
Intercity and Airport Travel
Intercity buses are often the best value for travel between major towns. They work especially well for day trips on main routes, but less well for late-night returns or destinations away from town centres. For airports, dedicated shuttle operators can be far cheaper than taxis, but times depend on route and flight schedule.
Compare bus and car costs
If you are deciding whether you can live without a car, compare your weekly bus use with fuel, insurance, road tax, parking and maintenance.

- Before signing a rental contract, test the exact bus route at the time you would commute.
- Check the last bus home, not just the first bus out.
- Keep cash or a backup payment option for smaller routes and ticket offices.
- Allow extra time in August, on public holidays and during major city roadworks.
- For rural homes, budget realistically for at least occasional taxi or car hire.
